TOPSIDE PANIC LEVEL: ☢☢☢☢☢ | FROZEN TRAIL IS COMING

Updated September 10, 2026: Spend your remaining Cred before October 8: Embark is retiring the currency, and unused Cred expires with Frozen Trail. Update 1.45.0 is live, bringing the Ascending the Mountain project and Expedition 5. Quest resets are now optional. Read Embark’s official patch notes.

Frozen Trail arrives October 8, 2026. The preview below was originally written August 28; Phantom Targets ended September 6.

I need everybody to understand something before we start.

I fucking love ARC Raiders.

I love it when a random Raider drops me meds and waves me through an extract. I love it when a Bastion starts rearranging a parking lot while everybody nearby suddenly discovers teamwork. I even love it when some rat bastard spends eleven minutes crouched behind a door waiting to murder me for two batteries, a cracked scope and whatever dignity I had left.

And I have been trying to drag my wife farther and farther Topside with me, because apparently marriage is about sharing hobbies and then quietly teaching the person you love why the phrase “DON’T FUCKING MOVE, I HEAR SOMEBODY” is now part of normal household communication.

So when Embark starts talking about Frozen Trail being the biggest ARC Raiders update since launch, a new frozen frontier, new ARC, an Outpost, deeper progression and some enormous high-level ARC Operation?

My brain does not process that information like a normal patch-note reader.

My brain processes it like I just walked into Stella Montis and realized I am standing in a three-squad Mexican standoff, somebody upstairs has a Rocketeer angry at them, my extract timer is bleeding out, and the Raider ten feet away keeps yelling “friendly friendly friendly” with the least friendly fucking body language I have ever seen.

So let’s go. Here is everything hot, weird, dangerous and genuinely badass happening in ARC Raiders right now, plus what October 8 is about to do to the Rust Belt.

THE BIG ONE: Frozen Trail Hits October 8

Embark has officially dated Frozen Trail for October 8, 2026 and is calling it the biggest update since ARC Raiders launched.

That phrase gets abused in games marketing so badly that normally I would throw it directly into the Bullshit Containment Unit.

But the feature list here is not one gun, two skins and a snow filter.

That is not a patch. That is Embark backing a dump truck up to Topside and pulling the lever.

The New Map Sounds Like It Was Built to Make Veterans Panic Again

Frozen Trail sends us beyond the mountains to investigate an unprecedented signal coming from a frozen settlement at the edge of the Rust Belt.

Embark describes abandoned villages, factories, research facilities and an observatory. The environment is being built around more verticality, more discovery and threats coming from above and below ground.

Read that last part again if you currently know every comfortable route through your favorite map.

Above and below ground.

Beautiful.

Exactly what I wanted: another place where I can be looking uphill for a sniper while a machine crawls out from somewhere underneath my ass and a third Raider decides my backpack looks more emotionally fulfilling than his own.

This is what I want from a new ARC Raiders map. Do not just give me more acreage. Break my instincts.

Make the guy with 400 hours hesitate again.

Make the route I thought was safe lead to something screaming.

Make me and my wife stop in the middle of a hallway because neither of us knows whether that sound was ARC, footsteps or the beginning of the stupidest firefight of the evening.

There Is an “Enormous” High-Level ARC Operation and I Am Already Making Bad Financial Decisions About Gear

This might be the piece that has me the most excited.

Embark says Frozen Trail introduces an enormous new ARC Operation built for experienced Raiders and centered around meaningful decisions, dynamic encounters, cooperation, judgment, combat, teamwork, risk and survival.

They have very carefully not called it a raid.

I am also very carefully saying:

That sounds raid-adjacent as fuck.

If this is finally the activity that makes me pull the premium shit out of storage instead of staring at it like an inherited firearm I am legally forbidden to touch, I am in.

I do not want “boss has 900% more health.”

I want:

That is ARC Raiders at its best.

New ARC Are Coming, Including One Apparently Built to Stop Your Ass Cold

Embark is teasing multiple new ARC threats, from a small nimble problem-maker to an enormous machine meant to stop Raiders in their tracks.

The part I care about is not merely size.

Embark says the new ARC are supposed to challenge the ways we have learned to move, fight and adapt.

Good.

Veterans are dangerous because eventually the machines stop being monsters and start becoming routines.

You hear a sound. You know what it is. You know the angle. You know the trick. Your hands start solving the problem before your brain finishes loading it.

Now make those instincts wrong.

Make me hear something new and immediately become religious.

If Frozen Trail has an ARC big enough that the first community strategy guide simply says “no”, October is going to be incredible.

The Outpost Could Be the Sneaky Huge Change Nobody Stops Talking About Later

The snowy map will sell screenshots.

The Outpost might sell another thousand hours.

Embark says the Raider Den is expanding into a deeper progression layer where we can inhabit an Outpost, decorate it, research parts of the world and start taking steps toward reclaiming the surface.

That sentence has teeth.

Extraction games eventually run into the same problem: once your stash is full, what exactly are you surviving for?

More purple shit so I can organize it beside my other purple shit?

I already own drawers in real life. I understand storage.

If the Outpost turns successful raids into persistent progress toward something personal, visible and expandable, that is a much bigger deal than another loot tier.

Frozen Trail is also bringing Skill Tree adjustments, Raider Deck improvements, new weapons, weapon personalization, gadgets and other progression changes.

We do not have the full mechanics yet. Embark says the deeper reveal is coming in September.

But the direction is obvious: give Raiders something larger than the next extraction to care about.

Expedition 5 Is September 8–29, Then Embark Is Putting Expeditions on the Operating Table

This is not some vague roadmap rumor.

Expedition 5 opens September 8 and closes September 29.

And then Expeditions are being paused until early 2027 while Embark digs into the system and tries to make it more rewarding and fun.

There are also immediate quality-of-life changes:

I actually respect this move.

There is a point where repeatedly sanding the same crooked table stops making it straight.

If Expeditions need deeper surgery, park the system and fix the damn thing.

Just remember: September 29 is the departure deadline. Do not become the Raider who spent three weeks saying “I’ll do it tomorrow” and then discovers time is apparently a mechanic too.

Meanwhile Phantom Targets Is Getting Weirder Right Before Frozen Trail

While everybody is staring at October, the current game is already doing suspicious shit.

Phantom Targets runs through September 6.

Shani has traced the strange behavior to erratic Wasps emitting weird noises, flying irregularly and carrying unidentified technology toward one location.

You can earn the Anomalia Outfit, Finger Guns Wave emote, Trashpile Bag and Raider Tokens.

Cool.

I want the drip too.

But narratively, I am more interested in why ARC behavior is getting increasingly weird just before Embark sends us beyond the mountains toward an unprecedented signal.

I am not declaring a conspiracy here.

I am merely standing beside the conspiracy board holding red string and looking extremely employable.

Update 1.42 Quietly Made Some Important “Please Stop Ruining My Night” Changes

Live Update 1.42 was not sexy enough to dominate trailers, but there is real stuff in it.

Map Conditions now use regional scheduling so they better line up with local peak play hours instead of everybody sharing one global schedule.

Embark also says its fair-play work with Anybrain and Denuvo Anti-Cheat has resulted in action against accounts using popular cheating software, while economy exploit detection and efforts against teaming and matchmaking abuse continue.

And yes, the Snitch can now call in a Rocketeer.

Because apparently the Snitch looked at its existing résumé and felt it needed leadership experience.

Also fixed: Queen and Matriarch stomp attacks sometimes hitting through walls or from ridiculous distances.

Wonderful. I prefer my giant mechanical murder devices to at least obey geometry.

Camera Mode Is Reportedly Coming in October Too

PC Gamer reported this week that a camera mode is coming with the October update.

Embark’s August Frozen Trail post has not yet laid out that feature itself, so I am keeping this in the reported, not yet fully detailed by Embark bucket.

If it lands, however, ARC Raiders was built for it.

The game accidentally produces wallpaper every fifteen minutes.

A sunrise over a destroyed facility.

A giant ARC silhouette through smoke.

Your Raider wearing something objectively stupid while death approaches majestically in the background.

Three strangers pointing guns at each other in Stella Montis while everybody performs advanced mental calculus about who is lying.

Give this community a proper camera and Embark is about to outsource half its marketing department to us for free.

COMING BACK TO ARC RAIDERS? HERE’S THE “WHAT THE HELL DID I MISS?” BUTTON

If somebody bounced after launch and reads all this thinking wait, Stella Montis? Matriarch? Raider Decks? What happened while I was gone?, IGN has a useful short recap of the major additions since launch.

WATCH: IGN — ARC Raiders: Everything Added Since Launch ↗

That is not a substitute for Frozen Trail news. It is the speedrun through how much the game already mutated before this next monster update.

The Part I Care About Most: Can Frozen Trail Keep the Chaos Without Making New Raiders Miserable?

I am already sold.

That is not the difficult audience.

I will willingly re-enter Stella Montis after being betrayed six raids in a row because apparently I possess the emotional learning capacity of a golden retriever.

The harder test is people like my wife and other newer Raiders.

ARC Raiders has to keep that brutal uncertainty without making every new player feel like they wandered into a veteran tax audit carrying starter gear.

The Outpost could help because persistent progress gives less experienced players another reason to care about a successful run.

Better progression could help.

Regional scheduling helps people actually see events.

Fair-play work matters enormously.

And if the new map is unfamiliar to everybody on day one?

That is fucking perfect.

For a brief beautiful window, the sweats do not know every angle either.

We are all idiots together.

The MazHatterIX Take: October 8 Is Looking Like ARC Raiders’ Second Launch

I have been with this thing damn near from the beginning, and ARC Raiders still manages to produce situations I could not script if you gave me three writers, a whiteboard and controlled substances.

That is why I love it.

Not because it is perfectly balanced.

Not because humanity behaves honorably once loot becomes involved.

Because every raid has the possibility of becoming a story.

You start out looking for one stupid component.

Seven minutes later you are trapped behind a concrete barrier with a stranger named something like xX_GrandmasTaxFraud_Xx, both of you are bleeding, a Hornet is screaming overhead, somebody in proximity chat claims they “just want to extract,” and absolutely nobody believes anybody.

Frozen Trail looks like Embark trying to make that storytelling machine bigger.

New terrain that breaks our habits.

New ARC that break our routines.

An Outpost that gives successful raids somewhere to matter.

A high-level Operation that might finally make the good gear worth risking.

An Expedition system Embark is willing to stop and rebuild instead of pretending it is fine.

And more details still coming in September.

October 8 is not looking like “ARC Raiders got an update.”

It is looking like:

EVERYBODY GET BACK TOPSIDE. SOMETHING FUCKING HAPPENED.
