Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon all have jobs. But players argue some jobs matter a whole lot more. Here's the MazHatterIX class balance breakdown.

THE QUICK HIT: Support is juggling revives and supplies. Engineer gets drafted into every tank fight. Meanwhile, Assault and Recon players are arguing that their roles are being misunderstood.

There are four familiar jobs in Battlefield 6: Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. On paper it’s a straightforward squad system. In actual multiplayer, it’s a never-ending argument about who is helping, who is padding stats, and who is about to leave the squad because nobody brought rockets.

EA outlines the tools and intended roles in its official Battlefield class guide. But useful on paper and useful in a Conquest match aren’t always the same thing.

Assault: the guy who has to make something happen

Assault is built to push objectives and create opportunities for aggressive infantry play. Mobility and spawn utility matter when you’re breaking a deadlock. The complaint is that on vehicle-heavy maps, some players feel Assault isn’t equipped to contribute meaningfully against armor.

That’s not an argument that Assault is worthless. Good infantry players can take over a match. It’s an argument that class design has to fit the maps EA actually gives us.

Engineer: congratulations, you’re the entire anti-tank department

Engineering is frequently the default choice whenever tanks, helicopters or aircraft are chewing through the team. Players have been saying this for months. One widely discussed class complaint asks why so much anti-vehicle pressure falls on one role.

There’s a counterargument: specializing gives squads a reason to coordinate. Not everybody should magically carry an RPG. That makes sense, until a map practically forces half the team onto one class just to leave spawn.

Support: the medic, quartermaster and unpaid babysitter

Support can revive teammates, provide supplies and stabilize a fight. Those things win games. But players disagree over whether the class has too many crucial jobs bundled into one. A discussion about splitting Medic from Support captures the argument: some want a dedicated healing role; others like having flexible support players.

Recon: the class nobody notices until it saves them

Recon’s scouting and long-range capabilities can help every class. The stereotype is a sniper lying half a map away. The useful Recon player marks threats, controls sightlines and supports the squad’s plan. There is room for both playstyles, but only one wins objectives reliably.

Recon is about information and positioning, not simply chasing the longest headshot.

The Maz Take: give everybody a real job

Support is running a hospital, an ammo warehouse and a customer-service department. Engineer is trying to keep a helicopter from turning the team into lawn fertilizer. Recon is either feeding the squad intel or auditioning for an aim montage. Assault is wondering why the rest of the group project got better tools.

My fix wouldn’t be to nerf every popular class into uselessness. I’d make class strengths obvious, give every squad a reason to mix roles, and make anti-vehicle teamwork possible without turning half the server into Engineers.

Maz verdict: Balance isn’t four classes getting identical toys. Balance is four different jobs that are equally worth doing.

Quick squad recipe

  • At least one Engineer on armor-heavy maps.
  • Bring Support when your team is bleeding tickets.
  • Use Assault to lead pushes instead of chasing random kills.
  • Keep Recon close enough that its information actually changes the fight.
